NetNames launches UK's first simultaneous domain and trademark search service
16 February 2006, London
NetNames has today launched its new Trademark Search Service which will combine the existing free worldwide domain name availability check with the option to run a simultaneous trademark check at no charge. With the World Intellectual Property Organization reporting that cybersquatting, domain name and associated trademark disputes grew by 20 per cent in 2005, NetNames’ new service will be a market first in allowing any individual or organisation to check that their domain names do not infringe on existing trademarks, before registering. The service will also provide organisations with greater visibility of any likely competition for their .eu domain name applications. Available now at NetNames.com, the Trademark Search Service is an easy to use online interface for checking exact matches and phrases which may contain trademarks. NetNames’ Trademark Search Service will check domain name searches against pending and registered trademarks from the US federal trademark database (USPTO) and the European Community Trademark (CTM) database for any possible infringements. The CTM gives brands uniform protection in all 25 countries of the European Union on the strength of a single registration procedure with the Office for Harmonization. NetNames will flag any possible trademark infringements for your desired domain name, or similar key words at no charge. If there is a potential conflict, details of the trademark holder will be available from as little as £19 per keyword. “Cybersquatting continues to be a problem for British businesses and this has been amplified across the continent with the arrival of the new .eu domain, said Jonathan Robinson, Chief Operating Officer, NetNames. “NetNames is taking an industry leading, responsible position by allowing prospective registrants to make sure they are not inadvertently infringing on someone else’s intellectual property. Robinson continued: “One of the most important yet difficult aspects of establishing a new brand is selecting the right name. There has been a growing demand in the market for greater visibility of potential trademark infringements and our Trademark Search Service will for the first time enable companies to simultaneously check that their desired brand and product names are both available as domain names and do not infringe on existing European Union and United States trademarks before investing in registering the name and commencing marketing of their new web sites.
